Uni degrees: What are they really?

Ok. I've almost finished my B Science in IT. I originally planned to finish last year, but I started a 1 year cadetship last August. Which then stretched my expected finishing date to end of this year. Then I encountered a horror subject in Image Processing and Pattern Recognition, which I've effectively dropped. So now I'm heading into my 5th year of uni.
My cadetship made me question a lot of things. My views on SQL development and the merits of a university education being the two big ones. I was brought up to believe that universities offered a more superior learning experience to TAFE and other technical colleges. That opinion lasted until a few months into my cadetship. I discovered very quickly that the stuff that I had learnt over the past two years was largely irrelevant to my work... maybe except for what little I had learnt in Database Fundamentals. I noticed that my friends who are went to TAFE before heading to uni had better technical skills. Probably from more practical work than listening to lecturers drone for hours on end.
As I moved closer towards the end of my degree, I couldn't help but wonder: is it proof that we've got the skills that businesses would want in their organisation or is really just proof that we can put up with the nonsense that our professional lives will throw at us?

So close to finishing....

I'm back at uni for what was originally my final semester at uni. "Originally", because I was planning on Image Processing and Pattern Recognition to be a subject that would be relevant to my future as a software developer. It was after the census date that I realised that it wasn't the case. It was after the deadline for withdrawing from subjects without financial or academic penalty that I realised that Image Processing just wasn't my thing. So now I've let the subject go - I'll be back next semester to do Database Programming or some similar subject.

The Hungry Programmer

My love of fine food started out during last year's staff Christmas party, when we were treated to gorgeous finger food at the Summit Restuarant (owned by Michael Moore). For the rest of my cadetship, I made a point of eating out for lunch every Friday (sometimes with a couple of my fellow cadets). Now that I'm back at uni for my second last semester, I really shouldn't be indulging so much. But I don't cherish the thought of having to live on Maccas and KFC until I graduate. Should uni students have to torture their taste buds for the sake of conserving cash?

Introduction to Computer Games Programming: a semester of hell

When I took up my cadetship, I decided I was going to keep only one subject. Which subject did I keep? Introduction to Computer Games Programming. I enrolled in the subject to begin with because I honestly thought that I was going to be learning about the basics of games programming. I never imagined that I was going to be dealing with an inconsistent subject. Instead of focusing on games programming for noobs, the lecturer drones on for an hour every Wednesday night about advanced physics concepts that are largely beyond the understanding of 80-90% of the lecture room, polished off with a demo of some obscure games programming concept. If that isn't enough, he neglects to put up the dropbox for the last assignment (which accounts for the largest part of the final mark). (I checked just a few minutes ago and still no loving dropbox)
You could very well envision my joy when I got around to filling out the Student Feedback Surveys. *cue evil laugh*

Hello holidays!!!

I just finished my final exam: Project Management. Now I can look forward to tomorrow, going shopping and having tea and scones. :D

End of ED.NET

Just got home after the ED.NET exam. I thought it went alright. I am a trifle annoyed at the institution's insistance that all students remain in the exam room for the first 90 minutes and the last 15 minutes.

To study or not?

I am not liking the fact that my first exam is this Friday. Its for ED.NET and even though I'm ok with ASP, HTML, CSS and C#, I don't want to do any study.

No more EBusiness Trading

I got out of my EBusiness class a while ago, but I stopped by McDonalds for a bite to eat. The big thing is that I am through with EBT. Also, I am going to look into doing Database Programming next semester.

A week of firsts

For the first time in the whole term, I've managed to make my eInstitution work. *relief* Now I need to go through and refine everything.

• add state and illocution for requesting and showing ID

Here cometh the assignmment peak period

It seems that illness hits me as soon as the assignment peak period starts getting fast-paced. I don't know if its coincidence or deliberate evil-doing, every assignment dor the second part of this semester is due within the next 2 weeks. PMP is due on Thursday and the group has barely made a dent.
